WHAT IS PULP?

Moulded pulp is the result of combining water and recycled paper – including newsprint, corrugated and other select paper grades – in a vat resembling a large blender and mixing to a consistency of about 96% water and 4% paper, achieving a slurry like mixture.

PROCESS

Using complex custom 3D designed moulds, which are normally made from aluminium, the mould is submerged into the pulp mix and a layer of pulp is sucked onto it. Excess water is removed by vacuum. The product is transferred from the mould onto a drying belt and is then dried through an oven using super heated steam. We can do a variety of colouring, embossing or after-pressing, dependent on the customer’s requirements.

BENEFITS

Lower Costs: Moulded pulp has a low raw material cost as it is made from recycled paper and water. In some cases your cost can be reduced significantly when compared to other materials such as EPS (expanded polystyrene) and other plastics.

Space Saving: Moulded pulp products are designed to nest well together allowing you to ship a larger quantity per delivery. Also less warehousing and factory floor space will be required for storage.

Time Saving: Reduces labour time and costs, and also allows production lines to run faster, due to quicker and easier packaging.

Protection/Cushioning: Superior crush resistance. Excellent vibration and cushioning qualities. Soft surface means no scratching or abrasions.

Environment: Cullen’s moulded pulp is produced from 100% recycled paper and we produce an environmentally friendly package that is 100% recyclable and 100% biodegradable.

Climate Tolerance: Moulded pulp performs in a wide range of temperatures and high humidity.

MUFFIN TRAY

Cullen Packaging works with new and existing customers, to provide solutions to improve performance and costs through our dedicated in house design department.

We were commissioned by one of the leading UK suppliers of baked muffins who supply in to high street retailers, to review their muffin baking process which involved time and labour consuming tasks to bake and transport their product to the end user.

By talking through the process with our customer, Cullen were able to design a new pulp muffin tray to hold either 6 or 12 muffins.  The beauty of this is that the muffins are both baked in it and then transported to the end user in the same tray.

Over 2 million muffin trays per year are being made via this process, with the operational benefits and associated cost savings now being enjoyed.

The product created was a moulded pulp tray specifically for muffins, but can be used as a cost saving solution for other baking products using an oven conveyor baking system.

All products are manufactured in the UK under BRC/IOP food packaging registration.
